The idea of Mother’s Day caught on very quickly with the public. On May 8, 1914, United States President Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation that designated the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day in Canada is also always celebrated on the second Sunday in May. This year it is May 9th, are you ready?

Where was Mother’s Day celebrated first in North America?

In North America, the first Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia. A school teacher named Anna Jarvis felt she had done enough for her mother while she was alive. Two years after her mother died, Jarvis asked the Andrews Methodist Sunday School, where her mother taught for 20 years, to hold a special service on the anniversary of her death. The service was to be in honour of all mothers. At the end of the service, Jarvis handed a carnation to each of the children in attendance – a white carnation if the child’s mother had passed away, or red if she was still living.

Mother’s Day was commemorated for the first time in Rome in the fifth century. Many countries have religious, historical or legendary celebrations honouring motherhood. Napoleon issued a special ordinance that Mother’s Day would be celebrated in 1806, though it was not recognized as an official holiday in France until 1929. The English began celebrating in 1914 and the Germans in 1931.

In most countries, Mother’s Day is now derived from the holiday as it has evolved in North America and Europe and includes giving flowers and gifts to mothers. Mother’s Day is celebrated throughout the year beginning in February in Norway through to December in Indonesia.
